Shot JMPD Officer Denied Emergency Treatment Over City’s R35 Million Debt

A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer is in critical condition after allegedly being denied emergency medical care at Netcare Milpark Hospital.

The hospital denied treatment following an outstanding R35 million debt owed by the City of Joburg.

The shocking claim was made by Sarah Wissler, Chairperson of the Public Safety Committee, who said the incident represents a “failure of governance that puts lives at risk.”

The officer was shot twice in the upper body during a pursuit of a suspect on Wednesday night.

He was airlifted to Milpark Hospital but, according to Wissler, was denied treatment due to the city’s unpaid bill.

He was later taken to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where he reportedly waited several hours before receiving treatment.

“The officer was refused medical attention and transferred to Charlotte Maxeke, where he waited for hours,” said Wissler. “This is unacceptable.

Our officers risk their lives every day for the safety of our residents they should not become victims of administrative failure.”

The officer who was initially denied treatment is currently in the ICU in critical condition.

Wissler confirmed she has escalated the matter to the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) and is demanding immediate settlement of all debts affecting emergency services.

She also called for a full investigation into the City’s liabilities and their impact on service delivery.

City Of Joburg Disputes Debt, Condemns Hospital’s Action

The City of Johannesburg confirmed the shooting incident and expressed its dismay that Milpark Hospital declined treatment.

However, the city disputes the R35 million debt figure cited by Wissler, suggesting that the matter is being misrepresented.

In a statement, the city said: “We are saddened by this incident and are working to verify all facts.

“The refusal to treat a critically injured officer is deeply concerning and will be addressed directly with the healthcare provider.”
