Shot In Broad Daylight: PKTT Takes Over Probe Into Emfuleni Accountant’s Murder

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has taken over the investigation into the murder of Martha Mani Rantsofu, an official from the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

Rantsofu was gunned down on 30 March in Vanderbijlpark while waiting outside a tyre shop. Her killing, captured on CCTV, has since gone viral on social media.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the specialised unit has now taken over the case, adding that the motive behind the murder remains unclear.

Disturbing footage circulating online shows the 39-year-old standing between two vehicles while using her phone.

Moments later, a man approaches from behind and opens fire. After she collapses, he continues shooting before fleeing the scene.

Police said the suspect remains at large, with no arrests made so far.

Rantsofu, who previously worked in revenue collection, had risen to the position of acting city accountant at the municipality.

Her brother, Tsotang Rantsofu, said the family has no clear answers about the motive.

“We are still in the dark,” he said, adding that investigators informed them the PKTT typically handles politically linked cases.

“I think what raised the red flag was the fact that she was an employee of the Emfuleni local municipality.”

He revealed that Rantsofu had been involved in a legal dispute with a property developer, with the matter scheduled for trial on 9 April.

‘Shock of My Life’: Brother Recalls Heartbreaking Scene

Tsotang described the moment he arrived at the crime scene after receiving a call from one of his sister’s friends.

“I saw a shoe and her leg…she was already covered. [It was] the shock of my life. I felt like my heart was outside my body and someone stabbed it with a knife.”

He believes the killing was deliberate and calculated.

“It was not a case of scaring her, but that [the shooter] was sent to make sure she does not see the sun the next morning.”

Rantsofu was laid to rest on Saturday. Her family says she had big ambitions and was set to graduate with an honours degree in public relations from the University of South Africa in June.

“She loved her work,” her brother said, adding that she often worked weekends.

“The relevant people should be arrested and tell us exactly what they were trying to hide [by killing her] because it shows that they are trying to hide something.”

Hassan Mako paid tribute, saying: “Mani was a dedicated public servant. I’m urging law enforcement to act swiftly on this matter. Justice must be served.”

Rantsofu is survived by her daughter, who is in Grade 12, her mother and five siblings.
