Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht Takes Home R87 Million As Retail Giant’s Sales Soar Past R250 Billion

Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht is smiling to the bank after pocketing a jaw-dropping R87 million for the 2025 financial year. The massive payout comes as Africa’s largest grocery retailer reported over R250 billion in sales, marking a R20.6 billion increase from the previous year.

According to the company’s latest remuneration report, Engelbrecht’s total pay includes salary, bonuses, and long-term share awards, reflecting a year of strong performance and retail growth.

Breakdown of Engelbrecht’s R87 Million Pay Package

The remuneration report reveals that Engelbrecht received a base salary of R21 million, following a 6% inflationary increase, along with short-term incentives exceeding R18 million and long-term share awards valued at R30 million.

While top executives enjoyed multimillion-rand rewards, the report also provided insight into what frontline staff earn across Shoprite’s stores.

Frontline Workers Earn Above Minimum Wage

Shoprite noted that its general assistants earn an average hourly wage of R32.43, which is 12.6% above the national minimum wage of R28.79 per hour, adjusted on 1 March 2025.

“With effect from 1 March 2025, the National Minimum Wage for general assistants was lifted to R28.79 per hour. The Group ensured compliance with this regulated minimum rate for all new appointments,” the report stated.

“All general staff in employment on 1 May 2025 received an annual increase resulting in the average rate for general assistants within the Group of R32.43 per hour, which is 12.6% above the national prescribed minimum wage.”

The group reaffirmed its stance on fair pay for frontline employees, noting: “Shoprite cashiers remain instrumental in driving consumer satisfaction. The Group maintained a higher rate of pay than the national prescribed minimum for all cashiers. At year’s end, the average rate of cashiers was 9.4% above the cashier national minimum rate.”
