Shootout Between Illegal Miners Sparks Panic In Brakpan’s Plastic City Informal Settlement

Residents of Plastic City in Brakpan were jolted awake by a series of gunshots early Thursday morning. Police confirmed that the incident was linked to a violent clash between illegal miners, known locally as zama zamas.

Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene, deploying officers to stabilize the situation. Some residents fled their homes in fear as the chaos unfolded.

Police Confirm No Fatalities After Shootout

Authorities have confirmed that, despite the heavy gunfire, no deaths were reported. “Police were alerted and rushed to the scene,” officials said. The confrontation is believed to have been between rival groups of illegal miners fighting amongst themselves.

According to police, the illegal miners emerged from a nearby dump site and set fire to several shacks during the violence.
