Shepherd Bushiri And Wife Win Big As Malawi High Court Shuts Down Extradition To South Africa

It seems the long-running legal battle to bring Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, back to South Africa has hit yet another dead end.

The High Court of Malawi has ruled in favour of the Bushiris, overturning a previous decision by a lower court that would have seen the controversial couple extradited to South Africa to face serious charges including fraud, forgery, and rape.

Judge Says Extradition Violated Bushiri’s Right to Life and Fairness

Delivering the judgment on Friday, 31 October 2025, Justice Mzonde Mvula said the extradition process was “procedurally flawed” and violated Malawi’s constitutional rights to fairness, equality, and the right to life.

“The right to life is more paramount than the availability to face trial,” the judge said, adding that the Gauteng Police had allegedly subjected the Bushiris to “extortion, intimidation, and kidnapping threats” rather than pursuing justice fairly.

According to the ruling, the original Magistrate’s Court hearing was “one-sided,” with the Bushiris not being allowed to properly defend themselves. As a result, the High Court officially set aside the March 2025 committal order that would have sent the couple back to South Africa.

South Africa Left Frustrated as Bushiris Celebrate Major Legal Victory

The High Court’s decision effectively halts South Africa’s years-long efforts to bring the Bushiris back to face justice. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether they plan to appeal or explore other legal avenues.

For now, the couple — who have repeatedly claimed they fled South Africa for their safety — remain in Malawi, free and vindicated.

While critics see the ruling as a blow to South Africa’s justice system, his supporters are celebrating it as divine intervention.
