Shamila Batohi To Face Parliament Over Prosecutor Interference Allegations

National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi is set to appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee on Tuesday to respond to serious allegations of interference levelled against prosecutors within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The committee, which is investigating corruption within the police service, is also expected to question Batohi about the operations of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) — a specialised body under the NPA’s wing.
Batohi’s testimony comes after IDAC head Andrea Johnson provided evidence before the same committee last week. Her appearance follows a series of submissions implicating prosecutors in alleged misconduct and interference in ongoing investigations.
Shamila Batohi – Allegations of Infiltration in the Justice System
During recent hearings, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made startling claims that infiltration within the criminal justice system extends to prosecutors, politicians, and even members of the judiciary.
These allegations have added pressure on the NPA leadership, prompting Parliament to seek answers from Batohi directly.
The committee is expected to probe whether the IDAC played any role in controversial operations — including an alleged project to arrest Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo, reportedly aimed at disrupting investigations into the so-called “Big Five” crime syndicate.

Ad hoc committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane confirmed during Monday’s planning meeting that Batohi’s appearance will be limited to one day.
Following her testimony, Minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde, is scheduled to testify on Thursday as the committee continues its investigation into corruption and alleged interference within the country’s law enforcement and prosecutorial structures.
