Seven Homes Burnt As Migration Tensions Escalate In Ekurhuleni Informal Settlement

Seven homes have been destroyed in a fire at the Marikana Informal Settlement outside Kwa-Thema, with authorities linking the incident to growing tensions involving local residents and foreign nationals.

Emergency crews from the City of Ekurhuleni responded to the scene after reports of multiple structures being set alight. No injuries were reported, but the situation remains volatile.

Ekurhuleni Fire Destroys Seven Homes

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (EMS) dispatched firefighters from the Kwa-Thema and Selection Park fire stations to tackle the blaze.

EMS spokesperson William Ntladi said two fire engines from each station, supported by 11 firefighters, were sent to the informal settlement after the emergency call was received.

“On arrival, four shacks from one yard were still burning, and the other three were from three different individual yards also still engulfed in flames,” said Ntladi.

Migration Tensions Linked To Marikana Informal Settlement Fire

According to Ntladi, the homes that were allegedly torched belonged to foreign nationals. He added that the occupants were reportedly forced out of their homes before the fires broke out.

Firefighters also faced challenges while trying to extinguish the flames.

“Members of the public prevented free fire ground operations from the crews.”

Authorities confirmed that no fatalities or injuries were recorded during the incident.

Law enforcement officers remain in the area as officials monitor the situation.

“The situation remains tense under the watchful eyes of law enforcement agencies.”
