Seven AKA Murder Accused Moved To eBongweni Prison Amid Heightened Security Concerns

The seven men charged with the murder of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and businessman Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane have been quietly transferred to a high-security correctional facility in KwaZulu-Natal, fuelling speculation around serious security risks linked to the case.

AKA Murder Suspects Transferred to Maximum-Security Prison

The accused were moved from Durban’s Westville Correctional Centre to the maximum-security eBongweni Correctional Centre in Kokstad. The transfer is understood to have taken place early in the new year, although correctional authorities have yet to officially explain the decision.

Sources with knowledge of the matter claim the move was carried out at the request of the state. The eBongweni facility is known for its advanced security infrastructure and is reserved for some of South Africa’s most dangerous and high-risk inmates.

State Tightens Security in High-Profile AKA Case

Forbes and Motsoane were gunned down outside a popular restaurant on Florida Road in Durban in February 2023 — a double murder that stunned the nation and attracted global media attention.

Following a lengthy investigation, the seven accused were arrested nearly a year later. Since then, the case has remained under intense public scrutiny due to its high-profile nature and alleged organised crime links.

Adding another layer of intrigue, it has emerged that two of the accused — brothers Siyabonga and Malusi Ndimande — have appeared in camera. Closed-court proceedings are usually reserved for sensitive legal matters, though officials have not disclosed why this step was taken.

The accused face multiple charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The matter remains before the courts, with further proceedings expected in the coming months as the state prepares its case in one of South Africa’s most closely watched criminal trials.
