Sergeant Nkosi Grilled Over AKA Shooting Video Shared Before Investigation Role

A Gauteng Organised Crime Unit officer, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, has told the Madlanga Judicial Commission of Inquiry that he circulated a video of the fatal shooting of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane before he became part of the investigation.

During questioning, Chief evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC pressed Nkosi on why he sent the widely circulated footage to a man referred to as Mr Sibanda.

Nkosi explained that, at the time, the video was already publicly available. “According to me, it was all over the news,” he said.

Chaskalson pushed further: “The footage itself, you could pull it down off the internet. Why did you send it to Mr Sibanda?”

Nkosi responded that the video was shared in the course of a discussion he was having with Sibanda.

Connections Between Victims and Known Associates Raised in Testimony

Nkosi told the commission that Sibanda had a personal link to the victims through another individual, identified as Mr Mthakathi. He said Motsoane was connected to Mthakathi via a family relationship, which meant Sibanda knew him.

He maintained that this connection was the reason behind sharing the footage.

“When I shared this video, I was not yet involved in that case. But I was sharing it on the basis that Mr Sibanda is also close to Mr Mthakathi,” Nkosi said.

When asked to confirm what the video depicted, Nkosi initially asked to write down his response before answering aloud: “Okay, but it’s already there. It was AKA and Tebello.”

Earlier, Chaskalson had asked: “Do you recognise what that video is, filmed (on the footage)? And what, whose murder was being shown there?”

AKA Murder Trial Delays and Investigation Details Emerge

Nkosi confirmed that he later joined the investigation into the double murder, working alongside KwaZulu-Natal police under the Organised Crime Unit. He said he had been assigned to the case by his superior.

However, he declined to disclose findings from the investigation. “I can’t know as in now (as) I left that investigation at the early stage,” he told the commission.

Seven accused individuals are currently facing trial over the killings on Florida Road in Durban. Among them are brothers Siyabonga Gezani and Malusi Dave, who were extradited from eSwatini. The other accused are Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi, Lindani Zenzele Ndimande, Siyanda Eddie Myeza, Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, and Lindokuhle Lindo Ndimande.

Court proceedings have been postponed until 19 June 2026 to allow for further pre-trial processes. Trial dates are scheduled for 20 July to 21 August, and again from 5 October to 6 November.

Nkosi is expected to return to the witness stand on Monday as the inquiry continues.
