Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial Postponed Again, Set To Resume May 19

The long-running murder trial of former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, resumed briefly at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday, only to be postponed yet again.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng set a new date of May 19, 2025, for the continuation of cross-examination of Brigadier Bongani Gininda, the lead investigator in the case.

The trial has faced repeated delays since its start in 2022, with the latest stemming from the untimely death of defence advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, who passed away in December 2024.

Mngomezulu had represented accused number one, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya.

Following his passing, advocate Charles Mnisi took over Sibiya’s defence but has also requested multiple postponements.

Judge Criticises Delay

Judge Mokgoatlheng has voiced strong criticism over the continuous postponements.

Last month, Mnisi requested additional time to prepare, despite being involved in the case since the tenure of the previous presiding officer, Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela.

“Mr Mnisi, you have had more than enough time – two months and three weeks,” Mokgoatlheng told the court.

He further warned that if Mnisi was unprepared, he would need to withdraw from representing Sibiya.

Despite initially stating he might recuse himself, Mnisi assured the court on Monday that he would be ready to proceed on May 19.

The five accused men – Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli,  remain in custody.

They face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. All have pleaded not guilty.

Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed on October 26, 2014, at the Vosloorus home of his then-girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo.

Inside the house at the time were Kelly, her sister Zandile, their mother Ntombi Khumalo (also known as MaKhumalo), musician Longwe Twala, Meyiwa’s close friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Thwala, and two children – Christian and Thingo, the latter being Meyiwa’s daughter with Khumalo.

The state alleges the incident was a botched robbery, but defence lawyers have continuously argued that the real perpetrators were present in the house and have not been arrested.

The case had to restart in July 2023 after significant procedural issues, adding to the growing frustration over the pace of justice.
