Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial: First Accused Muzi Sibiya Returns To The Stand For Cross-Examination

The first accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Muzi Sibiya, is set to return to the witness stand on Monday as proceedings continue in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Sibiya, who began testifying last week, is the first defence witness in the long-running case surrounding the 2014 murder of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa was fatally shot while visiting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s family home in Vosloorus, a case that has captivated South Africans for years due to its high-profile nature and complex twists.

Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial: Defence Testimony and Denial of Involvement

During his testimony, Sibiya denied any involvement in Meyiwa’s murder, insisting he was not in Gauteng at the time of the incident in October 2014.

He stands among five men accused of orchestrating and executing the crime. The defence’s argument contrasts sharply with the state’s version of events, which relies heavily on testimony from key witness Constable Sizwe Zungu.

Zungu previously told the court that all five accused were allegedly together at a Vosloorus hostel on the day of Meyiwa’s death, implicating them directly in the murder plot.

Advocate Zandile Mshololo, who represents the fifth accused, is expected to lead the cross-examination of Sibiya. Proceedings were adjourned on Friday to allow her time to prepare, following her two-day absence from court.

Monday’s session is expected to bring renewed scrutiny to Sibiya’s version of events, as the defence and prosecution continue to challenge each other’s narratives in one of South Africa’s most closely followed murder trials.
