Senzo Mchunu Denies Ties To Crime Syndicates Amid Task Team Controversy

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave, has firmly denied any association with crime syndicates or individuals implicated in criminal activity.
Appearing before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating police corruption, Mchunu said he had nothing to hide and was willing to hand over his electronic devices to clear his name.
Allegations Over Task Team Disbandment
Mchunu also rejected allegations that controversial businessmen Brown Mogotsi and Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala influenced his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Evidence leader Norman Arendse questioned how Mchunu’s directive, issued on New Year’s Eve 2024, reached the two businessmen in less than 24 hours.
Arendse presented WhatsApp messages allegedly showing Mogotsi and Matlala discussing the disbandment. However, Mchunu distanced himself from these messages, saying:
“I never spoke to Brown Mogotsi in this period, particularly about the disbandment. How he got access to [the] letter it is better explained by him.”

Maintaining his stance, Mchunu reiterated that he has no connections to any criminal syndicates.
“I want [to pursue] criminal syndicates. I want them, but not that I wanted to protect them.”
He added that his decision to dissolve the PKTT was guided by constitutional authority, asserting that the Constitution empowers him as minister to make such a call.
