Senzo Mchunu Concludes Testimony On Disbanding PKTT, Says He’s Grateful To Share His Side

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has concluded his testimony before Parliament’s ad hoc committee, expressing gratitude for being able to share his side of the story regarding his decision to disband the political killings task team (PKTT).

Mchunu appeared before the committee for four consecutive days, during which he faced tough questioning from evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse and various MPs.

The inquiry focused on his controversial move to dissolve the specialised task team that had been investigating politically motivated killings.

Throughout his testimony, Mchunu firmly defended his decision and denied any association with criminal networks or syndicates. He said the committee provided him with a fair opportunity to explain his actions in detail.

Senzo Mchunu Denies Links to Crime Syndicates

During the hearings, Mchunu was repeatedly questioned about his alleged ties to individuals implicated in serious crimes, including murder-accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. MPs also challenged him on his insistence that the task team be disbanded “immediately”, a point that sparked heated exchanges during the proceedings.

Reflecting on the conclusion of his testimony, Mchunu said he was relieved to have presented his account fully. “I would say the platform has been there and provided, and I had an opportunity to say what I wanted to say,” he told the committee.

Mchunu, currently on a leave of absence, said he had done everything possible to assist the inquiry in understanding his perspective.

Cele, Cachalia and Deputies Next in Line to Testify

The committee’s focus will now shift to other senior police officials. Former Police Minister Bheki Cele is expected to testify next, followed by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and deputy ministers Cassel Mathale and Polly Boshielo, who will each give evidence in the coming days.

Their testimonies are expected to provide further clarity on the decisions surrounding the disbandment of the political killings task team and its broader implications for the South African Police Service.
