Senzo Mchunu To Break Silence After Second Police Raid On KZN Family Home

Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to address the repeated police searches of his family home after officers seized a cellphone during the latest operation.

Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sthembiso Mshengu, said the suspended minister intends to speak publicly about the searches and other matters surrounding his name in the coming days.

The latest operation took place on Monday, 21 September 2026, when police served Mchunu with a Johannesburg High Court search-and-seizure warrant at his private family home in KwaZulu-Natal. Mchunu handed over the cellphone in the presence of his attorney.

KwaZulu-Natal police said the operation formed part of an ongoing investigation into cases including alleged fraud and defeating the ends of justice, which were opened at Durban Central police station in 2025.

Mchunu Handed Over Cellphone After Police Served Warrant

Mshengu confirmed that police officers arrived at Mchunu’s family home with a High Court warrant identifying specific cellular phones by their IMEI numbers.

“As a law-abiding citizen, and in the presence of his attorney, Minister Mchunu handed over the handset in line with the directive of the court.”

The latest seizure is the second time police have taken communication devices linked to Mchunu, according to his spokesperson. Mshengu said the first set of devices had not been returned when the latest operation took place.

“Minister Mchunu will address these developments and many other matters surrounding his name in the coming weeks.”

The warrant authorised police to seize specific devices, with reporting indicating that the latest operation targeted several phones and other electronic equipment identified through telephone and IMEI numbers.

Police Link Raid To Fraud And Defeating Ends Of Justice Investigation

Police have described the search-and-seizure operation as part of a normal investigative process.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit executed the warrant after it was granted by the Johannesburg High Court.

“This is part of an ongoing police investigation on cases of defeating the ends of justice and fraud, among other charges, which were opened in 2025 at Durban Central police station,” Netshiunda said.

The latest raid is reportedly the second search of a property linked to Mchunu. His residence was previously searched in October 2025, when electronic devices were also seized.

The seizure comes as Mchunu remains under scrutiny over events surrounding the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team and allegations of political interference in policing. Mchunu has denied wrongdoing and has appeared before the Madlanga Commission to give evidence on the issues under investigation.

Madlanga Commission Keeps Spotlight On Mchunu

The police minister has been a central figure in the broader parliamentary and commission inquiries into alleged political interference, corruption and criminal infiltration within law-enforcement structures.

The Madlanga Commission was established following allegations surrounding the policing of organised crime and the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team. Its public hearings have placed senior police officials, politicians and other figures under intense scrutiny.

Mchunu has appeared before the commission to explain his decision to dissolve the task team and address allegations concerning his role as police minister.

The commission has also heard allegations involving Mchunu from various witnesses. Those allegations remain contested and have not, by themselves, established criminal wrongdoing.

With the latest cellphone seizure now added to the developments surrounding his name, attention is expected to turn to Mchunu’s promised response in the coming days.
