Former Police Officer Sentenced For Corruption In Mthatha

Luyanda Xinishe, a former police officer, was sentenced to three years of direct imprisonment for corruption.

The case stems from a 2018 motor vehicle accident where Xinishe failed to complete a crucial accident report form, which was necessary for the complainant to process a claim with the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

Xinishe later contacted the complainant, demanding a J88 medical form and a R1,000 bribe in exchange for completing the report.

Hawks And NPA Collaborate In Investigation

The complainant immediately reported the incident to the Hawks, and an investigation was launched.

On 22 August 2022, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team executed an operation that led to Xinishe’s arrest while in the act of accepting the bribe.

The collaboration between the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) resulted in a conviction committed to rooting out corruption within the police force.

Court Ruling And Consequences For Corruption

Xinishe appeared before the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, where he was handed a three-year prison sentence with no option of a fine.
