Sedibeng Municipality Calls For Tougher Scholar Transport Laws After Vanderbijlpark Crash Kills 14 Pupils

The Sedibeng District Municipality has added its voice to growing calls for stricter regulation and stronger accountability in the scholar transport sector following a devastating crash in Vanderbijlpark that left 14 pupils dead.

The tragedy unfolded on Monday when a scholar transport vehicle was involved in a collision with a truck. According to police, the driver, who has since been arrested, allegedly attempted an illegal overtaking manoeuvre moments before the crash.

Twelve learners died at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital, plunging families, schools and the broader Sedibeng community into deep mourning.

The fatal incident has renewed pressure on authorities to tighten oversight of both formal and informal scholar transport operators. The municipality says the loss of so many young lives highlights critical gaps in road safety compliance and enforcement.

Sedibeng Mayor Urges Accountability in Scholar Transport Sector

On Friday, grieving families, community members and leaders gathered at a memorial service in Sedibeng to honour the 14 learners who lost their lives.

Addressing mourners, Sedibeng District Mayor Lerato Maloka made a direct appeal to drivers and transport operators to place children’s safety above all else.

“We support the provincial government’s commitment to toughen enforcement and greater accountability for scholar transport operators,” Maloka said. “We must ensure that it starts with you—that every driver and operator understands the lives of our children are precious.”

The municipality’s call signals a renewed push for stricter controls and sustained oversight within the scholar transport sector, as authorities seek to curb dangerous driving practices and prevent further loss of life.
