An employee from the Sedibeng Licencing Department has been suspended following allegations of manipulating the eNatis system for personal financial gain.

The individual is accused of siphoning off R5.5 million by remotely altering booking records on the system.

This latest fraud case, identified on 17 December, is part of a larger investigation into fraudulent activities by municipal employees dating back to late 2021.

The accused employee is also confirmed to be a family member of the Sedibeng mayor, further intensifying the public interest in the case.

Eight Municipal Employees Implicated In Fraud

The suspended employee is one of eight municipal staff members involved in similar fraudulent activities.

Four of these employees have already faced disciplinary action for fraud.

The scheme reportedly involved manipulating the eNatis system to carry out fraudulent transactions off-site, using the cashier’s user credentials, without depositing the stolen funds.

According to Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance, Jacob Mamabolo, a total of R18 million was stolen using this method between November 2021 and December 2024.

Calls For Swift Action Amid Growing Scandal

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has voiced its concern over the theft and corruption within the Sedibeng municipality, calling for rapid resolution and stringent action against those involved.

DA’s Kingsol Chabalala emphasized the financial strain these crimes are causing on an already struggling municipality.

In response, Sedibeng Mayor Lerato Maloka reiterated her commitment to fighting corruption, stating that appointments are handled by the municipal manager, not her office, to avoid nepotism.
