Security Guards Shot In Cape Town While Escorting Waste Management Staff

In a shocking incident on Thursday, a group of security guards providing protection to urban waste management workers in Brown’s Farm, Cape Town, came under gunfire, resulting in one guard being critically injured.

The shooting occurred while the guards were escorting refuse collection employees in an area that has seen escalating threats from criminal elements.

Attack Leaves Guard in Critical Condition

According to reports, two of the security guards were immediately taken to the hospital following the attack. One guard sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, leaving them in critical condition.

 

The other injured guard, though not as severely hurt, was transported by ambulance after leaving the scene in a refuse collection vehicle.

A total of four security guards were involved, though it remains unclear whether the attack was connected to extortion attempts targeting the city’s waste management services. The area has long been considered high-risk due to threats and demands from criminals seeking protection money from service providers.

Service Disruption

As a result of the attack, solid waste collection services have been suspended in affected areas, including Marcus Garvey, Brown’s Farm, Lower Crossroads, Samora Machel, Unathi Bester, and Philippi.

The suspension of these essential services is expected to have a significant impact on the communities that rely on waste management for health and hygiene.

Grant Twigg, the MMC for Urban Waste Management, expressed his outrage over the incident, stating, “These threats and attacks against staff working to uphold the basic rights of our most vulnerable communities must be condemned. Disruptions of services so many depend on for their health and wellbeing are unacceptable.”

The City of Cape Town has assured residents that efforts will be made to restore services as soon as it is deemed safe for employees to return to the area.

The safety and well-being of staff remain a priority as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and work to address the security challenges in the region.
