Secret Police Testimony: Madlanga Commission Set To Make Crucial Ruling

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is set to deliver its decision on Monday regarding an application for a witness to present confidential testimony behind closed doors. Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga and his fellow commissioners will issue their ruling as proceedings resume after a one-week adjournment.

Although the identity of the next witness remains undisclosed, the commission confirmed that it is not Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo, who has yet to conclude his testimony after falling ill two weeks ago.

Sensitive Police Operations at the Centre of Request

Evidence leaders are expected to argue that the upcoming testimony involves highly sensitive details linked to covert police operations. As such, they will request that the evidence be heard in-camera to protect national security and ongoing investigations.

It is believed the witness may belong to either the Gauteng Counterintelligence Team — which has been instrumental in dismantling criminal networks in the province — or the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.

Both specialised units have been central to several testimonies presented before the commission to date.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and Dumisani Khumalo have all spoken highly of these units, commending their work in tackling organised crime and politically motivated violence.

The confidential witness is expected to provide evidence over several days, potentially extending into the week, depending on the complexity of the testimony.
