Second Suspect Involved In Carjacking On Mahlangu Drive Gave Up The Ghost

An update on the carjacking attempt on Solomon Mahlangu Drive revealed that the second suspect succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital yesterday (24 February).

Recall, that the first suspect died at the scene, while two others, who had been waiting in a getaway vehicle, managed to flee.

According to eThekwini District police spokesperson, Captain Carmen Rhynes, the incident unfolded when the victim was confronted by two armed men as he returned to his car after shopping.

“One suspect approached him from the passenger side, while the other moved in from the driver’s side,” Rhynes said.

Additionally, the victim fought back, managing to wrestle the 9mm firearm from one of the attackers and fired at both suspects.

“The first suspect died at the scene, while the second was rushed to hospital but did not survive,” Rhynes confirmed.

Police recovered the firearm used by the suspects at the scene, with its serial number erased.

Brighton Beach police have opened an investigation into the attempted carjacking, though it remains unclear whether additional charges will be brought in relation to the shooting.

Meanwhile, authorities are searching for the two remaining suspects, who escaped in a waiting vehicle.
