Sebokeng Court Grants Bail To Fourth Suspect In Constable Gift Mokoena Murder Case

Tokelo Elvis Mothibedi, 26, appeared before the Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 September 2025, facing charges of assault and defeating the ends of justice in connection with the murder of Constable Gift Mokoena.
Mothibedi is the fourth suspect linked to the case and was arrested in Nigel on Friday, 5 September 2025. He was granted bail of R1,000 during his first court appearance.
Deadly Altercation Led to Officer’s Death
The case stems from a tragic incident on 16 May 2021 in Sedibeng’s Golden Garden area. Off-duty police officers, traveling with three civilian friends, pursued a suspicious vehicle overloaded with men. When the driver refused to stop, a high-speed chase followed.
The chase ended in a violent confrontation between the officers, their friends, and the vehicle’s occupants. During the scuffle, a firearm belonging to one of the officers discharged, fatally wounding Constable Gift Mokoena. He later died from his injuries at Nkanyezi Hospital.
