Sassa Plans To Expand Biometric Security With Facial And Voice Recognition Systems

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is preparing to strengthen its security infrastructure by extending its use of biometric technologies in grant administration.

The agency confirmed that it is looking beyond its current systems, which already include fingerprint and facial recognition, as part of ongoing efforts to curb fraud and improve identity verification.

This development follows the rollout of a compulsory biometric verification system at SASSA offices across the country in September last year, aimed at ensuring that grant recipients are properly authenticated.

The introduction of stricter verification measures came after the agency faced persistent challenges, including fraud, identity theft, and system-related disruptions that affected grant payments.

By adopting biometric solutions, SASSA has sought to tighten security controls and reduce vulnerabilities within its payment processes. The move marked a significant shift towards digital safeguards in the social grants system.

Voice Recognition Set To Complement Fingerprint And Facial Data

SASSA is now exploring additional layers of biometric identification, with voice recognition emerging as a key component of its future strategy.

SASSA’s Executive Manager for Grant Administration, Brenton Van Vrede, explained the agency’s long-term vision:

“Because what we want to do is to create a trust centre where we capture all your biometrics. Noting there is no organisation that has every single biometric of every single person so that still has to be built.

“Home Affairs remains our foundational database for fingerprints and facials. So home affairs will ultimately, once everyone has replaced their green ID’s and got smart ID’s, the authoritative source on face and fingerprints.”

The planned integration of voice recognition is expected to enhance identity verification processes and support broader efforts to modernise the system while maintaining alignment with existing national databases.
