SARS Seizes R56 Million Cocaine Haul In Durban Drug Bust

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has intercepted a ship carrying a staggering R56 million worth of cocaine off Durban’s East Coast. The operation, led by the Customs Marine Patrol vessel on Thursday, was described as “collaborative and intelligence-driven.”

The vessel was stopped at the fairway buoy before reaching port, where customs officials boarded to conduct a detailed search of the suspected cargo containers.

SARS Bust Cocaine Hidden Inside Refrigeration Units

During the inspection, officers discovered 25 bricks of suspected cocaine concealed within refrigeration units on board. A field drug test confirmed the substance as cocaine, prompting SARS officials to alert the police for further handling of the narcotics.

The bust represents a major disruption to organized crime groups attempting to smuggle drugs into South Africa through maritime routes.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter lauded the customs enforcement team for their efforts in preventing drugs from entering the country.

“Our officers are to be commended for disrupting the infiltration of drugs into the country and for protecting society from it,” Kieswetter said.

The commissioner stressed that such operations is a good example of SARS’s commitment to safeguarding South Africa against criminal networks seeking to exploit trade routes.
