SARS Publicly Releases Former PRASA CEO Lucky Montana’s Tax Records

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has made former Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) CEO Lucky Montana’s tax records public.

The announcement came during a media briefing held in Pretoria, where the revenue authority said it had acted within the framework of the Tax Administration Act.

According to SARS, the Act grants it the authority to disclose taxpayer information when necessary to defend and uphold the integrity of South Africa’s tax system, particularly in cases where false information may have been circulated.

Response to Montana’s Allegations Against SARS

The decision follows allegations made by Lucky Montana against the revenue service. SARS spokesperson Siphithi Sibeko said the agency had to act in response to statements that could damage the organisation’s reputation and professionalism.

“We afforded Mr. Montana the opportunity to withdraw his statement, which indeed harmed the integrity and the professionalism that SARS executes its work with,” Sibeko explained. “So we had no choice but to go this route. It’s unfortunate, but indeed SARS had no other option but to explore this option.”

SARS maintains that its actions are fully compliant with the Tax Administration Act, stressing that the disclosure was made not out of retaliation but as a necessary step to protect public confidence in the tax system.

The agency said transparency was crucial to ensuring trust and accountability within its operations.
