SARS Issues Final Warning: File Your Tax Return Before 20 October Or Face Penalties

With the 20 October 2025 tax deadline fast approaching, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has issued a stern reminder to non-provisional taxpayers to submit their income tax returns before the cut-off date—or risk facing penalties.

SARS said it “has made every effort to simplify and support the filing process through enhanced digital platforms, Auto Assessment, and accessible helplines.”

Commissioner Edward Kieswetter emphasised that taxpayers must meet their legal obligations. “The Commissioner urges all taxpayers not to abdicate their tax obligations: failure to submit a return by the deadline is a serious offence, and non-compliance can lead to administrative penalties and interest charges.”

SARS Highlights Progress—But Warns Against Last-Minute Rush

According to SARS, nearly 80% of non-provisional taxpayers have already submitted their returns, with over 7.9 million submissions received so far. However, more than 850,000 returns remain outstanding.

“Many taxpayers wait until the last minute to file their returns, hoping to meet the deadline. However, rushing invites errors, misjudgements, unnecessary stress, and long queues at SARS branches,” the agency cautioned.

To avoid such issues, SARS is urging taxpayers to take advantage of the few remaining days to file. “Filing early protects taxpayers from penalties and ensures a refund, if due, which is payable in 72 hours.”

Commissioner Kieswetter reaffirmed SARS’s ongoing efforts to promote voluntary compliance and enforce the law. “As part of our strategic focus to encourage voluntary compliance and enforce the law, SARS will continue to identify and act against those who do not meet their tax obligations.”

The tax authority also noted a rise in compliance this year, with submissions already surpassing last year’s 6.7 million total for non-provisional taxpayers, including those who were auto-assessed.

With the final deadline only days away, the service’s message is clear: file now, or face the consequences.
