Sarah Burger Ready To Testify At Madlanga Commission On Fort Hare Scandal

The ongoing Madlanga Commission has once again placed the University of Fort Hare under the spotlight. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola have linked alleged fraud and corruption at the institution to the murders of two university staff members.

Amid these revelations, Cape Town forensic investigator and lawyer Sarah Burger says she is eager to testify if given the opportunity.

“You live a daily life of high anxiety, and you come off that platform and you think everything is going to be okay, but there has been so much destruction, like a wrecking ball in your life,” Burger said.

Sarah Burger Reflects on Arrest and Role at Fort Hare

Burger recalled her arrest alongside fellow Cape Town lawyer Bradley Conradie, which left her grappling with the events of the past 18 months.

Both maintain their innocence and insist their work through Horizon Forensic, which provided services to Fort Hare for four years, was instrumental in exposing deep-rooted fraud.

“Both Bradley Conradie and I are willing to testify at the Madlanga Commission. We both submitted statements two weeks ago because of the highly publicised Fort Hare matter that we were involved in.

“And the involvement in the political killings task team. We haven’t received confirmation of those statements yet, but we are following up, and I think we can add quite a bit of value to the workings of the political killings task team and effects on the NPA,” Burger said.

Burger was among those accused of helping siphon more than R170 million through questionable contracts at the university. The allegations suggested senior staff colluded with service providers for kickbacks.

Charges Dropped, Burger Challenges Allegations

After charges against her were withdrawn in July, Burger signaled her intention to sue the state and police for wrongful arrest. She also criticized some of the testimony already presented at the Madlanga Commission.

“I know for a fact that there are certain half-truths that have been spoken in that commission. And I am looking forward to that cross-examination.

“I am really looking forward to the Madlanga Commission inviting me to come and speak because I want to share some of my views, in particular, to rebut some of the allegations, again, only in the Fort Hare matter, that the political task team did not have access to that docket or work on it. I have evidence to the contrary,” she explained.

Burger insists her testimony could shed light on the Fort Hare corruption scandal and its alleged link to political killings in the Eastern Cape.
