Tragedy On Duty: Two SAPS TRT Sergeants Killed In Witbank Crash En Route To Court

Two members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have died in a tragic crash while travelling on official duty.

The Tactical Response Team (TRT) sergeants were killed in a single-vehicle accident in Witbank on Tuesday night as they made their way to Pretoria to testify in court cases.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the crash occurred when the state vehicle they were travelling in lost control.

“The members were travelling to Pretoria on Tuesday evening, May 5, 2026, to testify in cases before the court when the state vehicle they were travelling in reportedly lost control, resulting in the fatal crash.

“At the time of their passing, both members were deployed as part of the eManguzi Task Team in KZN, where they were actively involved in combating cross-border crimes,” Mathe said.

eManguzi Task Team Officers Remembered For Fighting Cross-Border Crime

The officers were attached to the eManguzi Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal, where they played a role in tackling cross-border criminal activities.

Acting National Commissioner Puleng Dimpane described their deaths as a significant loss to the organisation.

“The loss of these dedicated officers is a devastating blow to the organisation. They served the country with commitment and courage. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones during this painful time,” Dimpane said.

The SAPS has extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased officers, particularly those within the eManguzi Task Team.

Authorities confirmed that the identities of the officers will be released once their next of kin have been formally informed.

The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) unit has been deployed to provide psychosocial support to affected families and colleagues.
