SAPS Sergeant And Retired Police Captain Killed In Fatal N1 Crash Near Botlokwa

Police in Botlokwa have confirmed the identities of three people who died in a devastating head-on collision on the N1 near Ha Phasa on Friday evening. Among the deceased were an active SAPS sergeant and a retired police captain.

The victims were identified as Sergeant David Mulanga Mabeba, 43, attached to Sunnyside SAPS, retired Captain Obed Malindela Tshikhudo, 62, formerly attached to Westenburg SAPS, and Rachel Mamphwe, 53.

Fatal N1 Collision Near Ha Phasa Claims Three Lives

South African Police Service spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba said officers responded to reports of a serious crash on the N1 at around 6.50pm on Friday.

“On arrival, police found two severely damaged vehicles involved in a head-on collision,” Ledwaba said.

According to preliminary information, a white Hyundai i20 travelling from south to north allegedly collided with a Toyota Corolla Sprinter travelling in the opposite direction.

SAPS Sergeant And Former Police Captain Die At Scene

Police found Sergeant Mabeba trapped inside the Hyundai i20 after the collision. Emergency medical personnel later declared him dead at the scene.

Inside the Toyota Corolla Sprinter, rescuers discovered retired Captain Tshikhudo and Mamphwe trapped in the wreckage. Emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to remove the victims from the vehicle.

“Both occupants were unfortunately certified dead at the scene,” Ledwaba said.

Police had earlier reported that a police appointment card was recovered at the scene before the victims were formally identified.

Limpopo Police Open Culpable Homicide Case

The cause of the fatal collision remains under investigation. Police in Botlokwa have opened a case of culpable homicide following the crash.

Thembi Hadebe extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in this devastating accident. We extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues affected by this tragedy, particularly the SAPS members who have lost one of their own and a former colleague. May their souls rest in peace,” Hadebe said.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing.
