SAPS Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo Dies After Deadly Durban Ambush That Killed Captain Louis Nel

The South African Police Service has confirmed the death of Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo, who succumbed to gunshot wounds following a deadly ambush in Durban that also claimed the life of Captain Louis Nel.
Khuzwayo and Nel Ambushed in Durban
Khuzwayo and Nel, both attached to Crime Intelligence, came under attack on 30 April 2026 while travelling in an unmarked state vehicle in Durban.
According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, unknown gunmen opened fire on the officers in what has been described as a hail of bullets.
Nel died at the scene, while Khuzwayo was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Police confirmed on Monday that he later succumbed to his injuries.
Acting National Commissioner Puleng Dimpane condemned the killings and said police were intensifying efforts to protect officers and track down those responsible.

“The loss of Sergeant Khuzwayo is yet another painful reminder of the dangers our members face daily in the execution of their duties. We remain deeply concerned by the targeting of police officers and are intensifying measures aimed at enhancing and improving police safety,” Dimpane said.
“We will not rest until those behind this senseless attack are found and prosecuted. A dedicated team remains hard at work following all possible leads.”
Police Hunt Continues After Durban Ambush
SAPS said investigations into the ambush are ongoing, with detectives pursuing several leads linked to the shooting.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the attack, and no arrests have been announced.
The killing of police officers, both on and off duty, remains a major concern for law enforcement agencies across the country.
Louis Nel Funeral Attended By KZN Leaders
Captain Nel was laid to rest in Durban on 8 May 2026.
The funeral service was attended by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, colleagues, family and friends.
Mathe said SAPS had extended condolences to Khuzwayo’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for both officers.
