SAPS Opens Assault GBH Case After Viral Video Of Child Allegedly Beaten In Oudtshoorn, Western Cape

Police in the Western Cape have launched an investigation after a disturbing video allegedly showing a child being beaten in Oudtshoorn spread widely on social media.

The footage has sparked public anger and concern across the country, with many calling for swift action. Authorities confirmed that a criminal case has been registered following the incident.

The video, which has circulated extensively online, appears to show a group of adults surrounding a crying child.

In the clip, one person can be seen striking the child with what looks like a stick while others remain nearby. The child’s screams are audible as the alleged assault takes place.

SAPS Investigation Into Oudtshoorn Child Assault Underway

Western Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed that a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been opened.

“The incident occurred on the corner of Van der Riet Street and Kruid Street, where a female assaulted a child. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and arrests are yet to be made.

“Anyone with any information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,” he said.

Police have not yet made any arrests as investigations continue.

People’s Prosperity Movement Responds to Viral Video

The Secretary General of the People’s Prosperity Movement (PPM), Chad Lou,w, also commented on the matter, urging calm and adherence to legal processes.

“Regardless of what the children involved may or may not have done, under no circumstances may violence be used. If there was any wrong action, there are legal and proper processes to address it,” he said.

He further called on the public not to racialise the incident.

“This case is not about race. Please do not try to send it in that direction. This is about a serious incident where violence was used, and it should be handled fairly and legally.”

Lou,w added that the matter had been escalated to the South African Human Rights Commission and that engagement with police leadership had taken place.

“I want to make it clear: I am not going to prescribe what the outcome should be.

“The appropriate authorities will follow the necessary processes and handle the case according to the law.”

Investigations remain ongoing.
