SAPS Limpopo Intensifies Efforts To Dismantle Drug Syndicates

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has ramped up its efforts to dismantle drug syndicates operating in the province, addressing growing community concerns over escalating crime rates.

The Hawks uncovered what is considered Africa’s largest illicit drug manufacturing laboratory in Groblersdal this past July, seizing drugs and equipment valued at over two billion rand.

Five individuals, including three Mexican nationals, are currently on trial in connection with the bust.

Provincial Police Commissioner General Jan Scheepers acknowledged the community’s crucial role in these breakthroughs, stating, “You can see that we are really making breakthroughs and that is with the help from communities.

“We cannot do this on our own, so the majority of these arrests were by our detectives, our tactical support teams, our crime intelligence, and all the units work together.”

Scheepers further explained the international nature of the syndicates, noting, “It’s a mixed group, some of them are foreign nationals. I think in one case in Groblersdal, you will remember that there were three Mexicans.

“So, it’s mixed, it’s South Africans but it’s also people from other countries. Some of them are legally in the country, some are illegal in the country.”
