SAPS Launches Manhunt For Jabulani Moyo After Fatal Shooting Of 2 Detectives In Roodepoort

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an urgent manhunt for Jabulani Moyo, a trial-awaiting prisoner accused of fatally shooting two detectives in Roodepoort, Gauteng, on Friday, August 8.

According to SAPS, the incident occurred while the detectives were transporting Moyo from court. He allegedly overpowered the officers, stole a state-issued firearm, and used it to kill them before fleeing the scene.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed that maximum resources have been deployed to track him down.

“Moyo must be stopped in his tracks, and he can only be prevented from committing further crimes if the community cooperates with the police by providing us with information on his whereabouts,” Masemola said.

Elite SAPS Units Mobilised for Search

The manhunt involves a multidisciplinary task force that includes crime intelligence operatives, detectives, the Gauteng DPC tracking teams, and the Hawks. These teams are actively scouring possible hideouts in a coordinated search operation.

Masemola emphasised the severity of the situation, warning the public not to harbour Moyo, who remains armed and dangerous. “We will not rest until we find him, and we are also warning him to hand himself over to his nearest police station,” he stated.

The commissioner added that “an attack on the police is an attack on the State” and urged all citizens to report any leads immediately.

Leaders Condemn Attack, Honour Fallen Officers

Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia strongly condemned the killings and vowed that Moyo will face justice.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen detectives. Their sacrifice in the line of duty is a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by our police officers,” Cachalia said.
