SAPS Issues Warning Over WhatsApp Vishing Scam Using Fake Police Cases

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning to the public about a growing vishing scam in which criminals impersonate police officials to trick victims into handing over money or personal information.

SAPS spokesperson Amanda van Wyk confirmed that fraudsters are circulating fake letters, often shared via WhatsApp, bearing the SAPS name and logo to deceive unsuspecting community members.

Fake Criminal Charges and Intimidation

Van Wyk explained that the scammers fabricate criminal charges against victims and then offer to make the “case” disappear in exchange for payment.

“In some instances, the alleged fraudsters fabricate non-existent police stations in their fraudulent correspondence. The SAPS can confirm that no police station exists in Green Point, Cape Town.

“In many cases, victims also receive intimidating phone calls from individuals posing as police officials, falsely claiming that a criminal case has been opened against them. Victims are then pressured to pay a fee to make the case disappear,” she said.

SAPS Urges Vigilance

The SAPS reminded community members that it never requests money to cancel or withdraw a case, nor does it communicate with the public through WhatsApp or video calls.

Authorities are urging anyone who receives such fraudulent correspondence or calls to report the matter immediately to their nearest police station.
