SAPS Constable Arrested After Alleged Stabbings And Police Station Shooting In Majola

A 24-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) constable has been arrested following a shooting incident at Majola Police Station on Monday.

Police said the officer allegedly opened fire inside the station after two complainants arrived to discuss incidents linked to alleged assaults and vehicle thefts that took place over the weekend.

The suspect was later arrested after reportedly fleeing into nearby bushes following a shoot-out with fellow officers.

SAPS Constable Accused Of Weekend Stabbings And Vehicle Theft

According to police, the constable allegedly stabbed two men during separate altercations on Saturday, 23 May, and Sunday, 24 May.

Authorities said the officer also allegedly took two private vehicles by force during the incidents. One of the vehicles was reportedly crashed, while the second rolled into water after being abandoned.

Police said no criminal cases had been opened at the time of the incidents.

On Monday, the two complainants visited the police station to discuss damages linked to the alleged incidents.

Shooting Erupts Inside Majola Police Station

Police allege that during the meeting, the constable forced open a colleague’s safe and took a firearm before opening fire on management and the complainants.

The acting station commander was shot below the left arm and was taken for medical treatment. Police confirmed the officer is in a stable condition.

A shoot-out then broke out between the suspect and other SAPS members stationed at the building.

The constable allegedly escaped into nearby bushes before police tracked him down and arrested him.

Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Condemns Incident

The suspect is facing multiple charges, including four counts of attempted murder, theft of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Additional charges linked to the alleged stabbings and vehicle thefts are also expected.

Police confirmed the constable is expected to appear in the Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Vuyisile Ncata strongly condemned the incident.

“This conduct is criminal and a betrayal of the SAPS uniform. Any member who breaks the law will be arrested and face justice like any other suspect. No leniency,” Ncata said.
