SAPS Ballistic Analyst Reveals How DJ Sumbody Murder Firearm Was Linked To Multiple High-Profile Killings

A South African Police Service (SAPS) ballistic analyst has revealed how the firearm used in the killing of Oupa Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody, has been connected to several other high-profile murders.

Captain Solomon Modisane, a senior forensic expert with SAPS, shared his findings while testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday.

He explained that his detailed analysis of cartridge cases and bullets recovered from the DJ Sumbody crime scene enabled him to match the firearm to evidence from other cases.

Modisane’s investigation showed that the same rifle was used in the murders of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, DJ Vintos, and businessman Don Tindleni.

Ballistic Evidence Confirms Firearm’s Involvement in Multiple Murders

“I found that these cartridge cases were fired from the same firearm, so they bear a common origin. This specific firearm is a 7.62x39mm calibre, Russian Kalashnikov model AK-47, full automatic assault rifle,” Modisane said.

The analyst provided an in-depth explanation of the technical methods used to establish the firearm’s involvement in multiple killings.

How Ballistics Experts Link Guns to Crime Scenes

“As ballistics experts, we compare the individual and class characteristics; these are the markings that are transferred by the firearm components onto the cartridge case and onto the bullets during the firing process.

“So, there will be those characteristics that we are looking for on every specimen to determine the origin of those specimens,” Modisane added.

His testimony highlighted the meticulous processes forensic experts use to trace firearms and connect them to multiple crimes, reinforcing the importance of ballistics in criminal investigations.
