SANTACO Mourns Assassinated Taxi Leader Thamsanqa Moyo In Gauteng

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) is reeling after the assassination of Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA) Chairperson Thamsanqa Moyo.

Moyo was shot dead on Thursday while driving along the Soweto Highway in Diepkloof, in what police say appears to be a carefully planned hit.

Confirming the incident, Gauteng police said the killing bore all the signs of a targeted assassination. Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia assured the taxi industry that the investigation would be treated as a top priority.

Industry Leaders Pay Tribute to Thamsanqa Moyo

SANTACO described Moyo as a forward-thinking leader dedicated to stability and progress within the sector.

“I have lost a counterpart, a comrade, and a fellow leader with whom we were spearheading the taxi industry toward a more sustainable and dignified future. His absence leaves a void,” said SANTACO Gauteng Chairperson Midday Mali.

SANTACO President Motlhabane Abnar Tsebe echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the depth of the loss:

“The passing of Mr Moyo is not just a loss to Gauteng, but to the entire taxi industry. He was one of the figures to whom we looked for unity, for prosperity, and for guiding our sector into a better future. To lose him in such a violent manner is unacceptable and deeply painful.”

Calls for Justice and Protection in the Taxi Sector

The organization has urged law enforcement to act quickly, warning that the industry cannot remain exposed to criminal violence.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a major setback for peace efforts.

“This is a devastating loss to the taxi industry and to Gauteng as a whole. Mr Moyo was a leader who played an important role in shaping dialogue within the industry and promoting stability. His untimely death is a blow to ongoing efforts to build peace, unity, and sustainable solutions within the taxi sector,” she said.

She extended her condolences to Moyo’s family, colleagues, and the National Taxi Alliance, while calling for calm and cooperation as investigations continue. Diale-Tlabela is expected to visit Moyo’s family on Saturday to personally convey her support and condolences.
