Santaco Leader Mongi Titi Assassinated At Nyanga Taxi Rank

The South African taxi industry has been rocked by another tragedy following the assassination of Mongi Titi, a respected member of the Santaco Western Cape Provincial Executive Committee.

Mongi Titi was fatally shot at the Nyanga taxi rank in Cape Town on Wednesday, sparking calls for calm and a swift police investigation.

Santaco Calls For Justice, Calm Amid Tragedy

In a statement, Santaco Western Cape described Mongi Titi’s murder as a devastating loss to the taxi sector.

“His untimely death is a devastating loss to our organisation and to the industry at large,” Santaco said.

“Mr.Mongi  Titi was a committed leader who played a significant role in our ongoing efforts to build a more unified, safe, and professional taxi sector in the province.”

The organisation has called on law enforcement to conduct a full and thorough investigation, urging the public to come forward with any information that may assist police.

Santaco also appealed to taxi operators and commuters to remain calm: “Violence must not be met with violence. We are urging all stakeholders in the taxi industry to remain peaceful and allow due process to take its course.”

Taxi Violence Concerns Grow Following Soweto Shooting

Titi’s murder comes just weeks after a fatal shooting in Soweto, which police suspect is linked to taxi route disputes.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza, three men were killed, and high-calibre ammunition was recovered at the scene.

“The incident is believed to be taxi-related. The victims all belong to a taxi association. At this stage, no one has been arrested,” said Kweza, confirming that police are investigating multiple angles related to the case.

Santaco Mourns Loss Of A Respected Leader

Santaco extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of Mongi Titi, his colleagues, and all who knew him.

“We will continue to engage with the relevant authorities to ensure that this matter is handled with the urgency and seriousness it deserves,” the statement read.

Mongi Titi was widely respected for his efforts to bring stability and unity to the Western Cape’s taxi industry, and his death marks a significant setback for efforts to resolve long-standing tensions within the sector.
