SANDF Strikes Back: R1.5m Stolen Land Cruiser Recovered From Limpopo River

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has successfully recovered a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser worth more than R1.5 million from the Limpopo River during ongoing border safeguarding operations.

Troops deployed under Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo say they remain “extremely vigilant” as they continue to clamp down on cross-border crime.

SANDF Soldiers Spot Luxury SUV Attempting River Crossing

According to the SANDF, members of 1 South African Tank Regiment detected suspicious activity on 8 February 2026 when they spotted a Toyota Land Cruiser, valued at R1,513,300, attempting to cross the Limpopo River — which was full at the time.

When the occupants noticed the soldiers, they allegedly fled to the opposite side of the river, abandoning the vehicle mid-crossing.

Troops secured the area and guarded the vehicle until 17 February 2026, when the necessary resources became available to retrieve it from the water.

After verification with the South African Police Service (SAPS), the vehicle was confirmed to have been reported stolen in Boksburg on 6 February 2026.

Second Stolen Vehicle Seized at SA–Zimbabwe Border

In a separate operation at Gumbu along the South Africa–Zimbabwe border, soldiers confiscated a Toyota Fortuner valued at R539,900.

Both recovered vehicles were handed over to SAPS for further investigation.

The SAPS Local Criminal Record Centre was called in to process the firearm and take over the case.

Officer Commanding Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, Colonel Dikgabane Herold Tladi, commended the members for what the SANDF described as a job well done.

The latest recoveries underscore ongoing efforts to curb vehicle smuggling and cross-border crime along one of South Africa’s busiest border regions.

Border safeguarding operations remain active.
