SANDF Soldiers And Zimbabwean Nationals To Appear In Court Over Illicit Cigarette Bust

Five members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), including a female soldier, along with two undocumented Zimbabwean nationals, are set to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 18 September 2025.

The group faces multiple charges, including corruption, possession of illicit cigarettes, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and defeating the ends of justice. The suspects are aged between 26 and 42.

Their arrests took place on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, during a joint intelligence-driven operation led by the SAPS Limpopo Beitbridge Task Team in collaboration with Military Intelligence.

Illicit Cigarette Smuggling Attempt Turns Violent With SANDF Soldiers

According to authorities, the arrests stem from an incident earlier that morning in Artonvilla, near the Limpopo River along the first Malaladrift road. The suspects allegedly conspired to intercept and steal a consignment of illicit cigarettes being smuggled into South Africa.

During the operation, shots were reportedly fired, prompting the smugglers to flee and abandon 24 boxes of illicit cigarettes. Law enforcement officials confirmed that six of these boxes were later recovered hidden inside a temporary military camp.

The latest arrests highlight ongoing efforts by law enforcement to clamp down on cross-border crime and corruption involving security forces. Authorities say investigations are still underway, and further arrests have not been ruled out.

The case is expected to draw significant attention when the suspects make their first court appearance in Musina on Thursday.
