SANDF Soldier Arrested For Drunk Driving While On Duty In KwaZulu-Natal

An on-duty member of the South African National Defence Force and a minibus taxi driver were among 59 people arrested for alleged drunk driving during a major law enforcement operation in KwaZulu-Natal.

The arrests were made over the weekend as authorities intensified road safety enforcement under the #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign and Operation Shanela. More than 2,000 traffic officers and police officials were deployed across strategic routes throughout the province.

Officials said the operations were aimed at improving road safety and preventing disruptions along key transport corridors.

SANDF Soldier Arrested During KZN Drunk Driving Operation

One of the most notable arrests took place in Ladysmith, where an on-duty SANDF soldier was stopped at a routine roadblock.

According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the soldier was arrested after allegedly being found driving under the influence of alcohol.

The arrest formed part of a broader operation targeting reckless and unlawful behaviour on the province’s roads.

Taxi Driver Allegedly 20 Times Over Legal Alcohol Limit

Authorities also arrested a minibus taxi driver who was transporting passengers at the time.

Officials alleged that the driver recorded a blood alcohol level approximately 20 times above the legal limit when stopped during the operation.

The taxi driver could face additional charges related to reckless and negligent driving due to the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Professionals Among 59 Drunk Driving Arrests In KZN

The weekend crackdown resulted in 59 arrests for driving under the influence across the province.

Authorities said those arrested came from various professions, including an Eskom quantity surveyor, a nurse, a teacher, an electrician, a human resources officer and a data capturer.

Duma praised law enforcement teams for their efforts during the operation and their commitment to enforcing road safety regulations.

All suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates’ courts across KwaZulu-Natal this week on charges linked to drunk driving.
