Political parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA, have expressed outrage over the presence of soldiers, citing concerns about the militarization of public order policing and disregard for constitutional safeguards.

Constitutional Concerns And Clarification

The EFF has sought answers from the African National Congress (ANC) and President Cyril Ramaphosa, referencing Section 201(2) of the Constitution, which states that only the President may authorize the employment of the defence force in cooperation with the police service.

ActionSA has also written to the Minister of Defence requesting clarification on the matter.

However, National Assembly chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, provided some insight, stating that SANDF members were merely traveling along the R56 and stopped at a gathering where SAPS had blocked the crowd, awaiting clearance to continue their journey.

The GOOD Party’s Secretary-General, Brett Herron, has expressed concerns about the deployment, emphasizing that the SANDF’s primary role is to address external threats and that domestic deployment requires Presidential approval and notification to Parliament.
