Former SAA Board Member Kwinana Back In Court Over Extortion, Fraud Allegations

Former South African Airways (SAA) board member Yakhe Kwinana is set to appear in the East London Magistrates’ Court today, Monday 25 March 2025.
Kwinana is facing charges of extortion, malicious damage to property, and unlawful evictions in the Eastern Cape.

The former board member, who was arrested last week during a police inter-provincial operation in Midrand, is accused of using armed security personnel and heavy machinery to demolish the homes of tenants who failed to pay rent.
Alleged Reign Of Terror

Police spokesperson Major General Nonkululeko Phokane stated that Kwinana is linked to a series of taxi violence and extortion cases in East London.

She allegedly threatened victims and extorted money from them, accompanied by armed men, and ordered the demolition of properties.
A taxi boss was also arrested in a “high-level operation” in East London, linked to numerous cases of taxi-violence-related murders, attempted murders, and extortion.
Previous Fraud Charges And Fines

Kwinana was previously fined R6.1 million in April 2023 after being found guilty of 13 out of 14 charges brought against her by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica).

She was also granted R20,000 bail in November 2024 after appearing in court on fraud charges.
The Gauteng division of the High Court dismissed her application to review and set aside the Saica disciplinary committee’s findings and sanctions.
