Legendary SA Comedian Soli Philander Dies At 65

South African comedian, actor and storyteller Soli Philander has died at the age of 65. The news was confirmed late on Wednesday night by Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, who paid tribute to the veteran entertainer’s long-standing impact on the country’s entertainment industry.

Originally from the Western Cape, Philander built a career that spanned several decades, earning recognition for his work in comedy, theatre, television, radio and film.

Soli Philander’s Television and Film Career

Philander became a well-known figure on South African television through a number of programmes that showcased both his humour and presenting skills. He appeared on shows such as Liriekeraai and also hosted the South African version of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

His acting work extended to both television and film productions. Over the years he featured in projects including Arendsvlei, Dias Santana, Hooten & the Lady, Devil’s Peak, and The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island.

Through these roles, Philander established himself as a versatile performer across different entertainment platforms.

Radio Work and Storytelling on Stage

Beyond television and film, Philander also made his mark in radio broadcasting. He hosted the talk show Airborne on CapeTalk, where he engaged audiences through discussions and commentary.

His presence on stage was equally notable. Known for his storytelling style, Philander used humour and personal narratives in his performances, building a loyal following among theatre audiences.

Gayton McKenzie Leads Tributes to Late Entertainer

Following news of his passing, McKenzie praised Philander for the joy he brought to audiences across the country.

“For decades, Philander brought laughter, insight and warmth to audiences everywhere in our country,” McKenzie said.

“Whether performing on stage, presenting on television, or sharing his always-ready humour through radio and public speaking, he possessed the rare gift of making people laugh by reminding us of who we are.”

The minister added that artists like Philander hold an important place in society.

“On behalf of the sport, arts and culture department, and as a longtime fan myself, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the many South Africans whose lives he touched through his work.”

Philander is survived by his sons Caleb and Ethan, and daughters Danya and Kyla.

He also helped care for a foster daughter, Lauren, during her final year of school alongside his then wife, Toni. The couple later divorced, a development Philander publicly confirmed in 2015.

The cause of his death has not yet been revealed.
