South African Chef 35 Dies In Tragic Necker Island Buggy Accident

Police in the British Virgin Islands are investigating the fatal accident that took the life of 35-year-old South African chef Sihle Somdaka over the weekend. Somdaka, originally from Willowvale in the Eastern Cape, lost control of an electric buggy on billionaire Richard Branson’s Necker Island.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) confirmed that emergency services responded promptly. “One male was transported to the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Another individual was treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the incident,” the RVIPF stated.

Acting Police Commissioner Jacqueline Vanterpool extended her condolences: “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. This is a tragic event, and the RVIPF is committed to conducting a thorough investigation.”

Richard Branson and Necker Island Team Respond to Tragedy

Although Richard Branson was not on the island at the time, he expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Virgin Limited Edition confirmed that Branson has been in contact with Somdaka’s family and the Necker Island team.

“It is with deepest sadness that we can confirm that one of our Necker Island team members sadly passed away on Saturday, 30 August 2025. They were a hugely talented and exceptional member of the Necker Island family, and we are all devastated by this news,” a spokesperson said.

“Our utmost priority is the well-being of their family and friends and that of our team, and we are doing everything we can to support them all during this very difficult time.”

Somdaka’s family described their grief, calling his death “devastating.”

Necker Island has long been a playground for global figures, hosting personalities such as Nelson Mandela, Barack and Michelle Obama, Princess Diana, Robert De Niro, Kate Winslet, and Kevin Costner.

The island has also faced past natural disasters. In 2011, a lightning strike ignited a fire at Branson’s residence, forcing 20 guests, including Kate Winslet, to flee. Six years later, Hurricane Irma caused severe damage in September 2017.
