Rustenburg Rape Suspect Re-Arrested Days After Escaping Custody In KwaZulu-Natal

On Saturday, 06 September 2025, a 23-year-old rape suspect was re-arrested in Rustenburg, North West, days after escaping lawful custody.

The suspect was originally arrested in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, on 01 September 2025 for rape but managed to evade authorities shortly afterward.

A multi-disciplinary police team was quickly assembled to track the fugitive, demonstrating coordinated efforts to bring dangerous offenders back into custody.

Tip-Off Leads Police to Suspect’s Hideout

According to authorities, a tip-off helped the team locate the suspect at an identified address in Rustenburg. The suspect was apprehended safely in the early hours of Saturday morning, ending his brief period on the run.

“The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s escape form part of ongoing investigations,” officials confirmed, as police continue to probe potential lapses in custody procedures.

This arrest comes amid heightened law enforcement efforts against sexual crimes across South Africa. In August alone, police apprehended 2 284 sexual offenders nationwide for offences including rape, sexual assault, abduction, and attempted rape.
