Rumours Swirl As DJ Maphorisa Hit By Claims Of Losing 280K Spotify Followers After Mashego Drama

DJ Maphorisa’s name is trending again—but this time it’s not for his music. A post on X (formerly Twitter) sent fans into a frenzy, alleging that the Amapiano star had lost a staggering 280,000 Spotify followers following the September 24 arrest drama involving Tebogo G. Mashego.

But here’s the twist: there’s no verified evidence to back up that claim.

According to checks on Maphorisa’s official Spotify stats, he currently sits at around 3.4 million followers with 4.1 million monthly listeners—figures that actually show growth, not decline.

Fans Split Over the Allegations

The unverified claims sparked a firestorm online, with social media users divided over what really went down.

One user, @dmoney811, suggested the story had been blown out of proportion:

“Spotify likes drama 🤣🤣🤣 police said there’s no case against Tebogo and what we saw trending wasn’t an arrest… someone called the cops because he was misbehaving. There’s no case against him.”

Another, @mizz_knievil, took aim at Maphorisa, writing: “I don’t know where the greed comes from this so-called gatekeepers because everyone should be eating nicely.”

Meanwhile, @Busi83246393678 added fuel to the fire, claiming:

“The reason he is doing all this crazy stuff is because he didn’t get paid for Biri Marung, despite its millions of streams & viral success. He’s still broke while others profit. DJ Maphorisa & Sony must do right and pay him. The industry is heartless.”

Others, like @osiristhe1, speculated that any visible dip in stats could be Spotify’s routine purge of fake or bot accounts:

“Are we sure it is not Spotify simply doing their cleanup of bot/fake/payola accounts etc…?”

For now, the rumour of Maphorisa losing 280K Spotify followers remains just that—a rumour. His official stats paint a very different picture of stability and growth.
