Rugby Tragedy: Teen Spectator Stabbed To Death At Langebaan Match

A rugby match in Langebaan, Western Cape, turned into a horrific scene on Saturday when 18-year-old Ryan Don Samuels was stabbed to death while watching the game.
His tragic death has sparked outrage, with social media flooded with tributes from friends, family, and the rugby community.
A Plea for Prayers Before Tragedy Struck
Ryan’s eldest sister, Berenique Diergaardt, revealed that their last conversation haunts her.
“My mother and I spoke to him that day. He told us he was in Langebaan visiting our brother, who is a police officer. But he also said he needed prayers because the Langebaan community wasn’t welcoming to outsiders,” she said.

Hours later, the family received the devastating call—Ryan had been stabbed and left to die alone on the field.
Rugby Match Turns To Cold-Blooded Attack
Berenique described the brutality of the murder, stating that Ryan had not provoked anyone.
“All his stab wounds were from behind. The suspect sat on him and stabbed him again—he wanted to kill,” she said.
Ryan’s brother, a police officer, rushed to the scene, only to find him lying in his own blood.
Despite the stadium being packed, no one helped him. “No one sat with him in his darkest hour,” Berenique said.
Murder Investigation Underway
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a 28-year-old suspect has been arrested and will appear in court once charged.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” Twigg stated.
Boland Rugby Union President Bennie van Rooi expressed deep sadness over the tragedy.
“We are working closely with the authorities as the investigation continues. The safety of everyone at Boland Club rugby venues remains our priority,” he said.
