Robbery Suspect Killed As Police Gun Down Getaway Car In Midrand

A suspected robber was fatally shot during a dramatic police pursuit in Midrand on Friday afternoon, following a business robbery along Allandale Road.

Gauteng police confirmed that two additional men were arrested after officers intercepted a vehicle believed to be linked to the crime.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said officers had been alerted to a business robbery and were searching for a Hyundai i20.

“The vehicle was spotted on Allandale Road and, upon seeing the police lights, it sped off, resulting in a high-speed chase and shootout,” she said.

Suspect Killed, Firearm and Cash Recovered at Scene

The chase came to an end at the intersection of Allandale Road and Waterfall Drive, where police managed to stop the vehicle.

One suspect was declared dead at the scene, while the remaining two were taken into custody. Officers also recovered a firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be linked to the robbery.

Police have not released further details about the deceased suspect or the value of the recovered items.

Recent Gauteng Shootouts Put Spotlight on Armed Robbery Crackdown

The Midrand incident follows another deadly police confrontation earlier this month.

On January 14, 2026, three suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with police on the N12 near Soweto. According to police, the suspects had allegedly robbed a courier vehicle in Tokoza and fled in a silver Toyota Corolla.

“They sped off, leading to a high-speed chase and shootout,” Nevhuhulwi said.

The vehicle eventually stopped on the N12 between the Xavier and Soweto off-ramps. Three suspects were declared dead at the scene, while a fourth sustained injuries. Two firearms and suspected stolen goods were recovered.

Gauteng Police Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni praised the joint operation involving the National Counter Intelligence, Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing and private security companies, saying it ensures criminals are brought to justice.
