Robbery Suspect Arrested In Canelands After Stolen iPhone 16 Pro Max Tracked Via App

A 28-year-old law student endured a frightening ordeal on Tuesday morning when she was attacked by two men outside her home on Taifiq Road in Riyadh, KwaZulu-Natal.

The incident occurred at around 09:19 when the suspects, armed with a screwdriver, confronted her in the driveway and demanded her cellphone.

The victim was assaulted before the robbers fled on foot with her iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Tracking Technology Leads to Dramatic Pursuit

Quick thinking by the victim helped turn the tide. She immediately used the Find My Phone application from her laptop to locate the stolen device and contacted the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre.

RUSA dispatched an officer who tracked the suspects in real time. The pursuit stretched over 45 minutes and led officers through Canelands, where the men tried to shake off their trackers.

One suspect dashed across a bridge, moved along a riverbank, and eventually jumped into a taxi on Vincent Dickenson Road.

Reaction Officers intercepted the taxi and apprehended the 23-year-old suspect. The stolen iPhone was recovered from his possession. Shortly afterward, the victim arrived and positively identified him as one of her attackers.

The suspect is now in custody at SAPS Verulam, while his accomplice remains at large.
