Robbers Killed In Police Shootout After Holding Gugulethu Woman At Gunpoint

Three armed robbers who allegedly held a Gugulethu woman at gunpoint met a deadly fate after a high-speed chase and shootout with police on Wednesday morning. One suspect was killed, another was arrested, and the third was wounded during the dramatic confrontation in Aries Road, Manenberg.

The incident began when an elderly woman, on her way to work, flagged down a Gugulethu SAPS van and reported that she had been robbed at gunpoint by three men driving a VW Polo. Police immediately began searching for the vehicle and spotted it nearby.

“When officers located the vehicle, the suspects opened fire on them before fleeing towards Manenberg,” said Manenberg police station commander Brigadier Jayce Naidoo.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Gunfire
With reinforcements alerted, officers from Manenberg joined the pursuit. The chase intensified as the suspects sped through the streets, refusing to surrender.
“As they turned into Aries Road, officers shot at one of their tyres to bring the car to a standstill,” Naidoo explained.
“The vehicle hit the curb and was blocked off by SAPS vans, but the suspects still attempted to escape, crashing into a police vehicle.”
The three men then abandoned the car and opened fire on the police, prompting officers to return fire.

One Dead, Two in Custody
The shootout ended with one suspect fatally shot, still clutching his firearm. A second suspect, aged 22, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was rushed to a medical facility under police guard. The third suspect, aged 27, was arrested on the scene.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into the shooting.

Community Applauds Police Response
Local Community Police Forum chairperson Vernon Visagie praised law enforcement for their quick and effective response.
“We commend the officers for their swift action, and we are relieved that no police officers were harmed,” Visagie said. “The fact that these suspects opened fire so recklessly shows the danger they posed to the community.”
With two suspects in custody and one dead, police continue their investigation into the robbery and shootout.
